Your job as a consumer is to get the most bang for your buck. Smart consumers spend less to gain more, and we look down on those who overspend. When it comes to purchasing luxury items such as watches, these natural consumer impulses are not ignored. The purpose of this essay is to highlight several “hidden areas of value” that could drastically alter why and where people buy watches. I’d want to start by putting this post in context, because folks who haven’t purchased watches before may not be aware of all the different areas where they may be found, as well as their numerous benefits and drawbacks. Assuming that products are available at grey market dealers and that all other factors are equal, it’s easy to see why people prefer to buy their watches from grey market watch shops. In fact, warranties are one of the few “public” arguments watch brands give to encourage people to buy from authorised dealers and boutiques. Gray market watches do not come with official warranties, which means that if there are problems with the watches, the consumer will be required to pay for repairs that would otherwise be covered under warranty – or, in some cases, the grey market dealer will provide their own warranty. Most watch warranties aren’t fantastic to begin with, to be honest. They can “rescue” you in many situations, but customer satisfaction with watch brand warranties and servicing isn’t very high – though that, of course, varies by brand… and things are starting to look up. However, if you have a solid relationship with an authorised store from who you purchased a watch and your watch has a true mechanical issue, you will be adequately “cared for.”
Is the only advantage of paying full or nearly full price for a watch the warranty? No, it’s not true. Over the years, I’ve discovered a slew of other intriguing advantages that come with purchasing timepieces from authorised dealers and/or single-brand stores. These are advantages that differ depending on the store, city, and brand… as well as the consumer. So, while I can’t guarantee that any of these advantages will apply to you if you buy a watch directly from a brand or from a brand boutique, there’s a strong possibility that at least some of what I’m going to cover will come as a pleasant surprise when you buy a watch through a “official channel.”
I asked a lot of questions and interviewed a lot of people while writing this post. I wanted to give particular examples of the unexpected advantages that purchasing watches from authorised dealers or brand boutiques might provide. While several brands were ready to speak with me off the record on the subject, they didn’t want to be directly mentioned or have me reveal what they do for their customers in this piece. That may appear unusual at first, but it has everything to do with safeguarding the exclusivity of their events and services, as well as not stepping on their approved dealers’ toes. Some benefits are exclusively available when you buy a watch from a brand boutique, while others are available whether you buy from a brand boutique or an authorised dealer.
That leads me to the second big reason why firms are hesitant to make these benefits widely known: they aren’t available to all customers or in all stores. The worth of these items varies, but they are not small – and when totalled up, they may well cover the cost of paying full retail in many cases.
Warranties that last longer
Buying watches from authorised dealers and specific brand boutiques might come with additional warranties in addition to the standard 1-3 year guarantee that most timepieces come with. It’s not uncommon for buyers of high-end brand boutique watches to have warranties of up to five years. These guarantees usually only cover movement or significant faults, however warranties can be highly important depending on your relationship with the vendors. A malfunctioning timepiece can, in the worst-case situation, be totally replaced with a fresh new one. In contrast, grey market vendors often offer no warranties and have “no return” policies, which might irritate customers who get defective watches. Most brands also provide no recourse to customers who come to them with complaints about grey market sellers.
First Purchase Possibility
Are you eager to get your hands on that hot new watch as soon as possible? Do you want to get your hands on a hard-to-find limited-edition timepiece? Retailers frequently keep track of their consumers’ preferences and maintain waiting lists. They can also make special requests to a brand’s headquarters if one of their clients expresses an urgent need for a specific model. This is true not only when a buyer is waiting for a new model, but also when limited production or limited edition products are extremely tough to obtain. Other brands simply wish to thank their loyal customers who buy from them directly or through authorised dealers.
